COMPENSATION TO VICTIMS OF HIT AND RUN MOTOR ACCIDENTS SCHEME, 2022

Under the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022 — effective from April 1, 2022, following compensation amounts are paid:

  • ₹2,00,000 compensation for death caused by a hit-and-run accident.
  • ₹50,000 compensation for grievous injury caused by such an accident.
  • Payments are made from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund via Claims Settlement processes.

Q1. What is a hit-and-run accident?

A hit-and-run accident is when a vehicle causes an accident and the identity of the offending vehicle cannot be determined despite reasonable efforts by the police.

Q2. Who is eligible for compensation under the Scheme?

  • Family/legal representatives of a person who dies in a hit-and-run accident.
  • Injured persons who suffer grievous hurt due to such an accident.
    Eligibility applies only when the vehicle remains unidentified despite investigation.

1. Police Must Inform Victims

When a hit-and-run case is identified, the police officer in charge must within one month:

  • Notify the injured person or legal representatives of the deceased about:
    • The existence of the Compensation Scheme (2022).
    • The compensation amount.
    • How and where to apply.
  • Provide contact details of the Claims Enquiry Officer (CEO) in their local area for assistance.

 

2. Forwarding Reports Quickly

Within one month of accident registration, the police must:

  • Send the First Accident Report (FAR) with victim details to the Claims Enquiry Officer.
